The latest post from our resident space crab inspired me to share a couple pictures of an antique lamp I own.
My parents bought it over 40 years ago. When they bought it they took it to an antique show hoping to find someone to turn it back into an oil lamp. What they discovered was that it never was an oil lamp.
Apparently it was built by a company that had found themselves with oil lamp parts when the new fangled electricity thing was all the rage. The solution was to build electric lamp components that fit onto the lower portion of an oil lamp.

Lady’s just don’t understand. How can she doubt the opinion of the chandelier pimp.

There is an old house in my family that has a couple of lamps like this, with an electrical wire running from the base through what presumably would have been the oil reservoir. Always struck me as extremely weird and dumb, but I guess it was an efficient use of the existing parts.

My wife hates station wagons. There’s no accounting for taste.

that is cool - my mother has one we would use during power outages growing up. It’s got a porcelain base - but not as tall as that one.

The scene on the lower part is both kitschy and cool. It makes it look like it would be at home in an old Vermont cottage.

On this one the plug comes out right above what would’ve been the reservoir.

I have three oil lamps for outages, but this one is electric so it would be useless with the power out.

Kitschy yet cool is probably the closest I’ll ever get to stylish.

It’s a good thing to be, at least in my book.

I showed her an AMC Eagle with wood sides and her response was “you don’t actually like that do you?”

No, but it is fragile though; so it must be Italian.

My late father-in-law has a massive oil lamp collection. Unfortunately o r mayb e fortunately, he auctioned most of it off before he died. The house I now live in was his and most of the light fixtures are either converted oil or gas lamps. We also have a very small collection of oil lamps that he did we wanted to keep. I will try to remember to post them up tonight. We lit the oil lamps for our wedding as a tribute to him. We also had the wedding at our/his house and property as a tribute to him also. I unfortunately never got to meet him.
